Synopsis
THE WIZ, an all-black musical based on L. Frank Baum’s classic “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York City on January 5, 1975. It ran 1672 performances on Broadway, making it one of the longest-running musicals on the Great White Way. With a book by William F. Brown and a score by Charlie Smalls, it won 7 Tonys, including Best Musical. It also won 5 Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical. Atlantic Records recorded the original cast album. In 1979 Universal-Motown made a film of the show starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne, and Richard Pryor.
Productions
There have been a number of foreign companies of THE WIZ; several national tours (the latest in 1992) and thousands of stock and amateur productions in the United States and all over the world.
