Melisa Tien

Melisa Tien is a playwright, lyricist, librettist, and producer.? She is the author of the plays BEST LIFE, THE BOYD SHOW, YELLOW CARD RED CARD, and FAMILIUM VULGARE, co-author of the music-theater works SWELL, MARY, and DAYLIGHT SAVING, and co-producer of the audio series/podcast ACTIVE LISTENING.  BEST LIFE was slated to be produced at JACK in 2020, but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  It is now tentatively scheduled for production in Fall 2021.  SWELL was part of the 2019 HERE Summer Sublet Series and will be produced as a live, online event in March 2021.  Ms. Tien was recently published in the anthology Theater Artists Making Theatre With No Theater (Spring 2020).  A New Dramatists resident playwright, she has been a recipient of a grant from the NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music, and Theatre, a commissionee of the Ensemble Studio Theatre/Sloan Project, and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow in Playwriting/Screenwriting.  She has also been a resident at the MacDowell Colony, the Millay Colony, and Tofte Lake Center, and a member of the 2010-2012 Women’s Project Lab.  She has presented work at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, the Great Plains Theatre Conference, the Women Playwrights International Conference, and the National Asian American Theatre Conference and Festival.? She teaches experimental theatrical writing at Sarah Lawrence College, as well as occasional workshops at the National Theater Institute.  She holds a BA in English from UCLA, an MFA in Playwriting from Columbia University, and a culinary diploma from the French Culinary Institute. www.melisatien.com.
